Matt was born and raised in Shubenacadie, Nova Scotia. He is the oldest of four boys who all grew up playing in the East Hants Minor Hockey Association. For major midget hockey, Matt made the move to Cole Harbour to play with the McCains (now Wolfpack), where he would play two years, leading the team in scoring in the latter. That would lead to him being selected by the Halifax Wolverines in the 2007 MHL Entry Draft. Matt spent two seasons in the MHL with the Wolverines and the Pictou County Crushers.

When he was 19, Matt decided to step into coaching for the first time. Along with playing for his hometown East Hants Penguins in the NSJHL, he would serve as an assistant with the Bantam AAA team for a few years. Once he was finished playing, he made the jump to the major midget ranks as an assistant coach with Dartmouth. He would also spent a year as an assistant coach with the Cole Harbour Wolfpack.

For the past 4 years, Matt has been the Head Coach of the U18 Midget Prep team at Newbridge Academy, playing an integral role in building the program up to one of the premier prep options in Canada. Matt has also served as the Head Scout for the Mariners over the past 4+ years.

Furthermore, Matt has extensive experience in skill development with players of all ages and abilities. In addition to his coaching duties at Newbridge, he also served as an on ice instructor for their hockey development program and was the Director of the Summer Hockey Camps for the school. He has also worked for hockey development programs all over the world and continues to work as a skills coach during the summer months for players at the Junior A, Major Junior, University, and Professional levels.
