Yarmouth, N.S. (June 10, 2025) – The Yarmouth Jr A Mariners are proud to announce the hiring of Matthew Barron as an Assistant Coach ahead of the 2025–26 MHL season.
A name well-known to Mariners fans, Matthew holds the title of All-Time Leading Scorer in franchise history and was a key piece in the club’s MHL Championship run. His deep ties to the organization and wealth of playing experience make him a natural fit behind the bench.
Following his time at Ontario Tech University, Barron went on to play professionally in multiple leagues, including stops with the Evansville Thunderbolts (SPHL), Indy Fuel (ECHL), Trois-Rivières Lions (ECHL), and most recently, the Leeds Knights of the NIHL.
Barron will join Head Coach and General Manager Laurie Barron, Assistant Coach and Assistant GM John Murphy, and Assistant Coach Aaron Boogaard on the Mariners coaching staff.
Matthew Barron:

I think it’s a great opportunity for me to learn from some great coaches in Laurie, John, and Aaron while also contributing some things I’ve learned during my playing years. I’ve been very fortunate to be around this organization for most of my life and I’m very grateful to be here once again. I look forward to working with the guys and seeing everyone come September!”

“I love how our staff is taking shape. Murph has been there for me since day one, then we were lucky enough to add Aaron Boogaard and all his experience at every level of hockey. I’m very excited to have Matty come aboard. Matty has been a Mariner as long as me—he’s been stick boy, filled water bottles, been a young rookie to seasoned veteran. The COVID season he came back from Ontario Tech and helped out on the bench and then again at the Centennial Cup. He’s got a great hockey mind and I always hoped at some point he would join me on the bench—that time is now.”
