Mariners to raise banner as MHL season begins

YARMOUTH, NS

The Yarmouth Jr. A Mariners will begin the defence of their 2018-2019 Maritime Hockey League Innaugral Canadian Tire Cup Championship on Friday when the visiting Truro Bearcats come to town to kick things off.

For the second time in their 19 year history, the Mariners will start the Maritime Junior Hockey League season by hoisting an Maritime Hockey League banner to their rafters.

The pre-game ceremony at Mariners Centre on Friday night will honour players and staff from the 2018-2019 squad who swept Truro in the first round and defeated South Shore in six games to claim the Eastlink South Division Title before sweeping Campbellton Tigers 4-0 on an overtime goal by Connor Peveril to claim the MHL title.

“It’s going to be a great night,” head coach and general manager Laurie Barron said this week. “Getting to see former players that were so vital to our success throughout the season will bring back some great memories.”

Former Mariners’ broadcaster and current Eastlink producer and play-by-play personnel Kevin Northup will MC the evenings festivities and had this to say regarding last year’s squad.

“I’m honoured to be a small part of this special night at Mariners Centre. The 2018/19 Yarmouth Mariners were an extraordinary group, and they will be celebrated for years to come. I look forward to helping recognizing their accomplishment as the team turns the page on a brand new season.”

Barron also added, “Andrew Martell led the playoffs in goals, Chris Goreham with his leadership and being a QB on the PP. Connor Peveril was our glue guy who scored the franchises biggest goal in team history. Brett Crossley who from day one brought leadership both on and off the ice. Every single player who wore the jersey last season had a special part of our success. Let’s celebrate last season and get a close up look at the newest Mariners”.

Yarmouth plays host on Saturday evening as Miramichi Timberwolves are in town for a 7:30 pm tilt against your hometown Mariners.
