The Yarmouth Jr. A Mariners received a significant boost to their offense on Tuesday with the confirmation that forwards Marco Desveaux and Justin Chiasson will join the team for the remainder of 2010.
Desveaux returns to Yarmouth after playing the last part of the 2008-2009 season in the QMJHL with Cape Breton and the first half of 2009-2010 with the Lewiston Maineacs. While in Yarmouth, Desveaux, a native of Cheticamp, earned 17 points in 30 games as a rookie before leaving to play for the Screaming Eagles. Justin Chiasson, also a native of Cheticamp, was acquired in a recent trade that saw goaltender Justin Collier go to the Weeks Crushers. Chiasson also arrives in Yarmouth after having spent time in Cape Breton where he earned an assist in 15 games. Chiasson was leading scorer and MVP of the Nova Scotia Major Midget Hockey League in 2008-2009 playing for the Cape Breton West Islanders.
Recently returned Head Coach Laurie Barron expressed genuine excitement when asked about his feelings on the addition of these two skilled young players. "It's certainly a nice treat to be able to have these players join the club at this crucial time", said Barron. "We are in a situation where we need to scrape out every point we can get over the next two months so adding these two will make a difference. Marco is a fan favourite who is feisty with a good work ethic. He will bring leadership to the team right away and Justin is a pure goal scorer that will be a threat every time he enters an opponent's zone."
Both players will be in the line-up for Friday night's match against Halifax. As the January 10th trade deadline approaches, the team will be busy making phone calls to try to further bolster the line-up for the remainder of the season.
